Background
Association for Water Applied Education and Renewable Energy (AWARE) is a non-profit organization working across Tharparkar and Umerkot, with previous implementations in Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, and Matiari districts. AWARE focuses on building resilient communities through food security and sustainable livelihoods amidst environmental hazards such as drought, high temperatures, and deforestation.
More than 5,000 families have been trained in organic vegetable production using underground water accessed via solar pumps and windmills.
1. Lightning Striking Incidents in Tharparkar & Climate Change Nexus
1.1 Increased Lightning Incidents in Tharparkar
Lightning activity, intensified by monsoons and climate change, has become a seasonal hazard in Tharparkar. Geographical openness, dry-hot desert air, and increasing atmospheric moisture contribute to cumulonimbus cloud formation and frequent strikes.
1.2 Losses from Lightning Strikes (2019–2023)
- 98 human deaths
- 33 injured
- 1,756 animals perished
1.3 Human Loss in Monsoon 2024
8 people died due to lightning strikes in June 2024; livestock losses also reported.
1.4 AWARE’s Mitigation via Lightning Arresters
In collaboration with terre des hommes (tdh) Germany, AWARE installed lightning arrester rods in 10 villages of Tehsil Chachro.
