Project Area: Two union councils; 1. KS Atta Muhammad Palli 2. Sabho/Koonjheli of Tehsil and district Umerkot.
Project Period: May 2024 to April 2026
Project Goals:
- Improve access to and quality of essential social services for the flood affected communities in Umerkot.
- Enhance the adaptive capacity and resilience of these communities to the adverse impacts of climate change.
- Strengthen community-led development and governance mechanisms for sustainable project outcomes.
Project Objectives:
- Increase access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities in the six target villages.
- Improve the quality and accessibility of primary healthcare services, particularly for women and children.
- Enhance educational opportunities for children, with a focus on improving school infrastructure and learning environments.
- Implement climate-smart agricultural practices and natural resource management interventions to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance food security.
- Promote diversified livelihood opportunities resilient to climate variability.
- Establish and strengthen community-based organizations (CBOs) to facilitate participatory planning, implementation, and monitoring of project activities.
- Raise awareness and build capacity within the communities on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and the importance of social services.
Project Activities:
The project activities will be implemented through a participatory approach, ensuring community ownership and sustainability.
- Social Service Interventions:
- Water and Sanitation: Construction/rehabilitation of water supply schemes (e.g., hand pumps, solar-powered water schemes), installation of household latrines, and hygiene promotion campaigns.
- Health: Establishment/upgradation of basic health units or outreach centers, provision of essential medicines and medical supplies, training of community health workers, and awareness sessions on maternal and child health, nutrition, and common diseases.
- Education: Renovation/construction of classrooms, provision of school furniture and learning materials, establishment of community learning centers, and teacher training programs.
- Community Mobilization and Capacity Building:
- Formation and strengthening of Village Organizations (VOs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
- Training of community members on project management, financial literacy, advocacy, and social accountability.
- Conducting awareness campaigns on the importance of social services, climate change adaptation, and environmental protection.
- Facilitating community participation in needs assessments, planning, and monitoring of project activities.
